This is just a random thread i thought i'd share. Just an easy read ;]
Well i was taking all my reptiles out earlier in the garden for some sunning and to take some photographs. And well the nextdoor neibours looked over their fence and seen what i had, it always feels good when you get the attention from people about your animals. Well i got them out, one after a other, just sharing facts and stuff. And crowd of about 10 people were over the fence. It was giving a mini talk on reptiles and how big, what they eat, what they are kept in and everything. It made me feel amazing.
It's swayed my ideas to a side. I would love to obviously breed reptiles in the future for a hobby, but to sell the offspring for the upkeep of the reptiles and everything. But something i have considered is going around school, my confidence has shooted right up. I would love to do phobia classes aswell. I seem to love working with people who are interested in any exotic animal. It's something i love, and theres nothing better i like doing is then helping people.
I feel im in the right seat for my future, just about to start my last year of animal care (diploma award). Then possibly a uni to study herpatology. But if something jumps out infront of me like, a zoo keeper job with the reptiles. Then i'd go for it. But i really like the idea of self employing myself and going to schools and halls to do phobia classes.
Sorry for the rant! Im just happy at the minute :) Reptiles are my life, with out a doubt.
well said Scott and i wish you all the best with it! Its what i did as a youngster did talks and visits as long as whatever you do is that you promote te positive end of things and present facts and people realise about all the negative things that relate to our hobby then i think you would do very well and it boosted my confidence no end because it was theonkly thing i knew anything about so go for it lad hehe
With out a doubt. The problem with the reptiles and exotics, People don't know enough about them. So there natural reactions are to be frightened of them. But when told all the positives about them, and how special they are. You see the eyes get bigger :]
Wow Scott! i knew you wre passionate mate but yes as both Ian and Dave have said go for it.
Going into schools is a very good start. I have doen a few myself and althouht the kids were very young and maybe didnt understand all about them, they just wanted to look and touch. BUT it is therei 1st encounter with reps and they loves it. Getting the younger generation interested is terrific because they are the hobbiests of the future. Oh hun i wished you were not quite so far away!
Scott i also love the idea of the fear factor classes as i think its what peopel need.
People are afraid of these animlas because they dont know enough about them. What they do hear is usually bad stuff about them on tv programmes so there fore ASSUME they are all nasty, slimy and biters!

Totally. It's usually the case people are scared of reptiles is because they know nothing about them, and if there parents are scared, they will never let there child get close. It's just a main one on one session with the younger generation. I suprisnling love children, especially when you know its helping out the herping future.
The amount of times i've heard "oh there not slimey!!".
Thanks for your support. Really makes me feel good and pushes the confidence sky high!
And LInda, Im In Fife. Your In Aberdeen Area Right?
Good Idea About the Blog, Think I Might!
Have you ever been to one of the SEAS shows in livingstone its a reptile club?. It would be a good idea to find out about doing a talk there? I was meant to do one back in june/july on boas, but due too ill health I had to put it off.
Food for thought scott. As for the blog..........go for it!!
Linda you wanna be my receptionist and manager! Haha.
Your doing a good job. Yeah i thought about it. I've wanted to go, but its just the hole first time meeting. And i have nothing as amazing as you lot in reptile wise! But yeah, also transport.
Im meeting Lynn (glasgow) her username on rfuk is "sparkle" shes really nice. so if things go to plan ill defo get of my back side and come :)
I noticed that you breed land snails, now in all the time I have spent at the livingstone reptile meetings I have never heard anyone do a talk on them? Is that food for thought, if your mega interested in them, let other people know how cool they are, as they are ideal for children and educational? This month is kinda out due to my trip down south as I have to pick up snakes, but would you like me to contact the organiser about you doing a talk one month, and it would also be a great way to sell them as well as they have a classifieds section and with you being local, it would also be a good idea as there are a lot of pet shop owners who go to the meetings?
I have a big fancy laptop and I would easily help you out with a presentation if you want as they can supply a projection screen?
Food for thought Scott, and it dont have to be on land snails, so if your interested just let me know how I can help.
Have fun.............................Linda
p.s and we can pick up ian as well for moral support he he
Awww Linda. Thats really nice of you. Great idea, i would love to do a talk on them, boost the moral up and confidence. To be honest, i'd love to go for a few times first to get to know everybody and what everybodies interests are.
I dont think i'd do a talk on the snails, as theres not much into them. It would last about 5-10 minutes if that. Cracking Idea, have you been stalking me? Haha.
I really do appreciate ur concern for getting me going. Its lovely.
I would love to talk about an animal which is quite uncomman. There is some crocodile skinks in a pet shop i go to in moniegfieth, a breeding pair for 250. I would love to do a talk on these, but i think it would be much easier if i had a pair. Pretty pricey. Would love them though. They also have a rough green snake that i was keen on, only 24 pounds. And quite alot to talk about, how most are wild caught, eat circkets and do not live for a very long age.
I would only talk about something i think 100% confident about, and know a fair amount. Because i would hate to do a talk, and everything knows everything about them anyway. I wouldnt like to be in the audience in that case, n i dont think others would.
But whens the next meeting linda, coz im totally up to meet everyone :)
